What is Modern Mrs. Cleaver?

Modern Mrs. Cleaver came about years ago…one of those times in life where you’re sitting around and the imaginary light bulb comes on. I found myself thinking of all the unfortunate wisdom and tradition from the past that is falling to the wayside to be forgotten. Things that I believe society has come to either take for granted or just simply not value.

Times have changed…believe me I understand completely. However, I aim to bring it all back! I laugh as I contemplate what I, one person, might be able to achieve in doing this. My goal is to reinvent and pass along recipes that are cost effective (lets face it times aren’t cheap)…and yet delicious and fun to make. I hope to bestow humor by the retelling of my day-to-day life as a housewife and mother. (If ya can’t laugh as a housewife ya got a serious problem)!

If all that fails, I will still walk away knowing that my husband, my children, and my home have all reaped the benefits of  my work. I will rejoice in the fact that my children know the taste of a pie crust made from scratch, and I will watch with delight as they dive into the treats I make on a shoestring budget.

I particularly enjoy seeing the vintage pictures you’ve included from the past. You’re off to an entertaining start.

I love what you’re doing, but then again I’m your mother. I guess all the lectures didn’t go in one ear and out the other. Although it didn’t seem like it way back when, life was so much simpler and thus, better back then.

It amazes me to talk to the youger girls/ladies and they have no idea of what some simple phrases or words mean! Take “acting ladylike” as an example. I’m sure my look of surprise astounds them, but then you have an opportunity to define it for them. All of a sudden you feel better inside knowing that you have actually experienced or lived in that moment and could use a true life experience to use as an example while explaining it to them.

Keep up the entertaining and educational tidbits.

Love the site I’m looking forward to lots of good home cooking recipes especially ones for the grill. I will make sure to inform others about your excellent food.

  6. How funny that I find your blog and read about this today! A friend of mine told me today that I was her ‘June Cleaver with a twist’! I will definitely direct her to your blog and facebook page! She’ll love it!
I see we have a lot in common when it comes to cooking and family. I’ve really enjoyed your recipes…can’t wait to try them…especially your Cranberry Eggnog Monkey Bread!

  7. Thanks Tina! I find it hard to accept that so many “homemade” traditions and recipes are being thrown to the wayside and forgotten, so I decided to do something about it. Glad to see there are others that share my same passion. Let me know what ya think about the bread 🙂

    Very Nice,

I struggle to keep a grip on old fashioned living and values. My wife died 7 months ago (breast cancer) and it is tough to maintain the type of environment that we used to have. It’s so nice to see that others strive for the same things that I do… good decent family living.

    • Kevin,
I’m so very sorry to hear of your loss. I am so proud of the person you are, the kind of person that places value in old-fashioned morals and upbringing. Hold your head high and know that, through pain and sorrow, you are CHOOSING to hold the structure of your home firm. I wish you the best and will have your family in my prayers. Thanks for your comment.

Hi, love your site. I love making home made thing.

  12. Sheryl Mehary

Just found your blog. Yes, let”s hold on to the old days in our homes. I have been introducing all my friends to macaroni and cheese made from scratch and baked in the oven. I try to be true to the old recipes and stay as frugal as possible.

  15. Elizabeth

    Enjoying your website.

  16. So happy to find your blog. It’s proof there are many others that feel the need for the comfort and simple pleasures in life to be revisited and enjoyed. For the past 22 years I have operated Wallach House
Home Furnishing, Antiques & Gifts located in Eureka Missouri. We all know times change (and that is needed), but I have listened to my customers and realize that so much has been lost about cooking, homemaking and time spent learning about nature. If you value these traditions then take the time to pass them on to future generations, lest they be forgotten. Thank you so much for your inspiration.

I can’t wait to see your holiday stuff–Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Christmas.

  18. I just joined your blog. I truly cannot wait for the fall to come and enjoy what you will show everyone for Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas.
Thank you so much for this wonderful site.

  19. I’m delighted to have found you…I’ve been cooking from scratch all my life since I can’t have MSG. And it will be such a pleasure to try some of your recipes. Happy in Arizona!

    • Welcome aboard Bobbie, so glad you found me! I have a friend that cannot have MSG, and I know how limiting that can be as far as anything packaged or processed. I enjoy making things from scratch and try my best to avoid things like seasoning packets and boxed ingredients…they are HUGE culprits in the MSG department. Hope to hear from you again!

  20. I have just discovered your blog, and your fb page! I couldn’t be happier!!!! Excited to follow along…and try some of your yummy looking recipes! Wish me luck, as I am NOT that good of a cook! 😉
