Lucille Ball would have celebrated her 100th birthday this week. I grew up laughing as she hiked her skirts and stomped grapes, smiling in amusement as I watched her stuff chocolates down her shirt in the factory. This lady truly was hilarious!
As a tribute, I have attached the following video….watch, reflect, and laugh!
A quick trip through Wal-Mart with my nine-year old son proved to be a great experience…..on many levels.
As we went through the check out line with our groceries Chase, my son, spotted an elderly woman sitting on a bench near the doors. He asked me, “Mom why does that lady look sad?” I quickly glanced over and determined he was correct. The woman was obviously waiting on someone as she kept looking at a particular line, however did not look very happy.
Now I had a choice as a parent. I could walk out of the store and not give the woman another thought, or I could turn this into a learning lesson for my child. We walked over to the display of single flowers and I asked my son to pick one out for the woman on the bench. He looked at me rather strangely and I told him I would explain later. He picked out a lovely soft pink rose and took it through the checkout line, smiling at me as he paid the $2.50.
Super simple and sinfully delicious….If you need an excuse to splurge, here’s my little trick. TELL YOURSELF IT’S ONE BITE!
The puffs are easy to make, set aside, and fill later. These puffs can be stuffed with savory or sweet fillings. Tonight, I chose sweet.
I was in the mood…it happens from time to time! In the mood for some chicken with a little kick, something that fights back. I took my normal recipe for fried chicken and raided my supply of all spices red. Emeril would have said “BAM” I’m sure!
Below is the recipe, or the closest I can get since, I’ll be honest, I didn’t really measure…..It was a tad bit spicy but packed full of flavor!
After browsing through many ideas for homemade air fresheners….I have found this combination to be the best! Nice clean smell from the vinegar and a “homey” touch from the vanilla and cinnamon. Will definitely be spraying this before people come over!
1 1/2 cups water
1 cup white vinegar
1 Tbs. vanilla extract
3-4 cinnamon sticks (or a sprinkle of cloves)
Boil the mixture for a few minutes, allow to cool, then strain and pour into a spray bottle. Make sure you shake the bottle each time before using.
P.S. makes your sofa smell delicious
Back in the 50’s this dilemma saved money! True…having one vehicle was the norm, and microwaves were not for sale until the mid 60’s….but this presented “No Problem” for the clever housewife!
After the husband drove to work, many women walked to the store for a bag or two of groceries…they went often therefore did not need much each visit. Not only was it free transportation (hoofing it is still free) but it provided her some time away from the house.
The convenience of a microwave (now termed NUKING) was unheard of, and for most families, far too expensive when announced for sale by Amana in the 60’s for a whopping $500.00! Meals were planned ahead and cooked for longer periods of time. A model for success…as true today as it was back then!
Here’s a tried and true tip: “IF IT TAKES YOU LONGER IT WILL SAVE YOU MONEY!” Not hard to remember right?
The reward…an excellent cake, happy kids, smiling hubby, and not a bad picture 😮
Recipe is in the following post…ENJOY!

If your kids are like mine…they don’t enjoy a carrot cake packed full of “optional” ingredients like pineapple, raisins, etc. To turn the “I’ll pass” into “Can I have seconds”, I altered an old recipe into the following kid friendly creation. I have removed the raisins and pineapple, and added ground mace (more mellow than nutmeg) and some vanilla. The kids have instructions not to touch it until after dinner, we’ll see if they follow directions 🙂
